One of the most common questions the CBD NJ Shop team hears is “Will taking CBD show up on a drug test?”. Well, in short, it can – but it doesn’t have to. Let me explain.
Your favorite CBD Products, much like other products in your home, go through scientific processes that turn the source material – hemp flower in this case – into a byproduct. This byproduct is then used to create your product.
To answer the “Will I Pass a Drug Test” question we have to dig deeper into the resulting CBD byproduct. There are three main types of CBD materials used today when manufacturing CBD products: Isolate, Broad Spectrum, and Full Spectrum.
CBD Isolate, which has been the most commonly used material for years, contains only CBD. All the other plant materials are removed. These other materials include THC (what makes you fail a drug test), CBDA, CBC, CBG, CBN, and up to 100 less popular chemicals naturally found in the hemp flower.
Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad Spectrum CBD, which is one of the newer extraction methods, contains numerous Hemp-Derived Cannabinoids beyond CBD. The purpose of the Broad Spectrum extraction process is to remove everything except the THC. This leaves (no pun intended) not only CBD but doesn’t remove other non-THC cannabinoids. This is typically considered a more sought after product because it provides the physical benefits of both CBD and the other cannabinoids.
Full Spectrum CBD
Full Spectrum CBD, which is similar to Broad Spectrum CBD, includes the 0.3% or less of THC mandated by federal law. If you didn’t catch it from the previous sentence, Full Spectrum products contain THC. This is where you’re concern lies.
Let’s summarize. Please note that the following data table offers no guarantees and should only be used as a reference.
|CBD Manufacturing Product||Can Fail Drug Test?|
|Broad Spectrum CBD||No|
|Full Spectrum CBD||Yes|
It seems pretty simple, right? Well, let me throw a wrench in your thinking. One aspect of the “Will I Fail a Drug Test” question we haven’t talked about yet is “What kind of drug test are we talking about?”.
There are several types of drug tests, some more reliable than others. The most reliable ones include Hair Follicle (some debate there), Mouth Swab, Urine Tests, and Field Tests. The type of test in question, which has shown numerous problems in the past is the Field Test.
There are numerous circumstances when a Law Enforcement Officer uses a Field Test and gets bad, unreliable, results. Famously, a Field Test showed that kitty litter was meth, and more specific to our discussion, these same tests can’t tell the difference between THC and CBD. Knowing this is mostly inconsequential because the “Will I Fail a Drug Test” question involves testing by an employer.
CBD & Drug Tests in the News
Well, if you’ve read this far into the article you’re likely already familiar with the stories involving the US Military Banning CBD Product Use, a School Bus Driver Lost Her Job, and a Truck Driver is Suing After Failing a Drug Test.
Regardless of the news and concerns about CBD Use and Drug Tests, there is a positive note in this story: A Judge from North Carolina rules that you cannot be fired from your job for using CBD Products.
If you are concerned about Failing a Drug Test, the safest CBD product is one made with CBD Isolate. To ensure that you’re taking a product that contains Zero THC, then you simply need to ask for the particular CBD Products Certificate of Analysis. It will show you how much THC was detected, this number should be 0%. Between these two best practices, you’ll be as safe as you can be while using CBD Products.
Don’t forget, you can always drug test yourself for verification purposes.
